Did you know here at IAM in York we offer a full body mole check with our Skin Lesion Specialist Nurse, Rachael. Firstly book an appointment which can be from 30-60 minutes. Rachael will take a detailed medical history and take images using the dermatoscope (a bit like a magnifying glass). Sometimes these images need to be sent to our Consultant Dermatologist for review. If any abnormailites are detected then we will liasise with your GP and send the images and report findings to allow a quicker and smoother referral into the secondary care within the NHS.

Any benign lesions can be removed here at IAM either with Nurse Rachael or Mr Lim. Biopsies can be taken and sent for histology.

What are skin tags?

Skin tags are small growths that hang off your skin. They’re common and harmless, but can be removed if they’re bothering you. Skin tags are made of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels surrounded by skin. Collagen is a type of protein found throughout the body.

What skin tags look like?

Skin tags are small, soft, skin-coloured growths on your skin. They can vary in colour and size – from a few millimetres up to 5cm wide.

Who gets skin tags?

Skin tags are usually found on the neck, armpits, around the groin, or under the breasts. They can also grow on the eyelids or under the folds of the buttocks. Pregnant women may also be more likely to develop skin tags as a result of changes in their hormone levels. Some people develop them for no apparent reason. Skin tags tend to grow in the skin folds, where the skin rubs against itself, such as on the neck, armpits or groin. This is why they tend to affect overweight people who have excess folds of skin and skin chafing. Both men and women can develop skin tags

Skin tag removal is regarded as cosmetic surgery, which is rarely available through the NHS. Cosmetic surgery is usually only available on the NHS if the problem is affecting your physical or mental health.

All cosmetic treatments, including non-surgical ones, can have risks. They should always be carried out by someone trained and qualified to provide them.

Mr. Philip Lim is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon (GMC 4219068) who undertakes both NHS and Private work. Do not be afraid to ask any of our Practitioners their qualifications and expertise, how often they’ve performed it, what the risks are and how often complications occur.

Take as much time as you need to make your decision. We strongly advise you take at least two weeks after your consultation with Mr. Philip Lim to think things through before you have surgery.
